With beautiful, green parks sprawling over the city centre and Belfast’s beautiful Lagan River running through scenic hotspots, cyclists are spoiled for choice with cycling routes around Belfast.

We have highlighted some of the most popular cycling destinations around Belfast to get you prepared for your trip here:

The Lagan and Lough Cycle Way on National Cycle Network 93 and 9 is a 21 mile mostly traffic-free cycle and walking route connecting Lisburn, Belfast and Jordanstown. The route is suitable for novice and family cyclists of all ages and abilities and passes along the waterside of the Lagan Towpath and Belfast Lough. It can be split easily into shorter sections using the trains, which carry bikes. There are several stations along the route including one at each end.

The Comber Greenway is a very popular route. The 7 mile traffic free path of the National Cycle Network follows the old Belfast to Comber railway line. The traffic free walking and cycling route begins at Dee Street in East Belfast close to the Harland and Wolff shipyard. From the Holywood Arches to Dundonald the Greenway provides a beautiful, green pathway through East Belfast with points of interest along the way including the CS Lewis Statue, views of the Harland & Wolff Cranes, Parliament Buildings at Stormont, and the Belfast Hills.

Belfast Lough Greenway is a 9km traffic-free route from the centre of Belfast along the River Lagan as it flows into Belfast Lough. A shared pathway through the Belfast Harbour Estate opens out into a dedicated greenway between the Lough shore and the M2 and M5 motorways on reclaimed land. The route follows into Whiteabbey and Hazelbank Park before linking into the excellent Newtownabbey Greenway.

The Barnett Demesne Trails consist of a shared use 3.4km green trail and a 3.9km blue trail with 3 red loop options (1.5km). With Ireland’s first official purpose-built jumps park boasting no less than 6 lines of mouth-watering table-tops, doubles and hip jumps, these trails tick all the right boxes! The trails start from the Mary Peters Track in South Belfast. The green trail runs parallel to the meandering River Lagan and is wide with gentle inclines, making it ideal for young families and those giving mountain biking a go for the very first time. The blue trail consists of tight, winding single track perfect for beginners with a bit more confidence right through to experienced riders. There are three red options off this trail which boast a number of more tricky trail features including elevated boardwalk, log rides, berms, rock gardens, rollers and drops. You can hire a bike here from as little as £20.
